Never Forget Our Culture: 'Sarong party' For Younger Generation

28.02.2012
Commuters who boarded the train at KL Sentral were met with the strange sight of sarong-clad fellow passengers.
About 500 people dressed in sarongs boarded trains at 4pm on Saturday while singing Rasa Sayang to the accompaniment of kompang and djembes, as part of the Keretapi Sarong event.
For some, this was their first time wearing the traditional garment. 'If it weren't for this event, we would have never got the chance to wear the sarong,' said Justine Tan, 20, a law student from Brickfields Asia College (BAC). She was seen with other BAC classmates, some of whom had borrowed sarongs for the event.
Ashalia Yusof, 24, a producer, was there to pay tribute to her late father who died four years ago. 'My father's favourite clothing was the sarong. I am wearing his favourite one today and I know that he would have been proud to see me wear it with pride,' said Ms Ashalia.
