8,000 soldiers to assist Jakarta Police on tomorrow’s protest
Despite criticism, the National Police confirmed on Monday that they had requested the assistance of the Indonesian Military in handling the security before the planned fuel price hike in Jakarta.
At least 8,000 soldiers will be deployed Tuesday to assist the Jakarta Police in facing expected protests against government’s plan to increase fuel prices on April 1, National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Saud Usman Nasution said. He told a press conference that the Jakarta Police had received reports that at least 8,000 people would join in protests across Jakarta.
Saud said that the soldiers would be under the command of the Jakarta Police. He added that the soldiers will not be equipped with firearms such as pistols or rifles.
For the city, the Police will deploy at least 8,000 police officers. However, the Police had also prepared 22,000 other officers, including the 8,000 soldiers, to ensure safety.
